The club isn’t originally from Colorado. In fact, it appeared in 1972, in Quebec, as the Nordiques. This name translated from French as ‘Northmen’ and related to that the team was the Northern-most one in the American hockey sport. Soon after, in 1995, the team moved to Denver and changed its name to Avalanche.

The logotype that was in use as the principal visual identity of the team appeared right with the club’s foundation. It depicted the cup-like insignia of the red color with the blue contour, and the hockey club with puck. This emblem was placed in the thin red circle with the ‘Quebec Nordiques’ on the perimeter.

1985 – 1995

The following logotype represented generally the same image with the club and puck, but in the bigger shape and with no circle and name.

1995 – 1999

Upon moving to Denver, the team introduced this emblem. It depicted the character ‘A’ with the major position in the logotype. The letter was intertwined by the curious line, moving from the black-colored start to the avalanche-like middle part and coming out to the simple blue line on the background.

The 1999 Colorado Avalanche brand logotype depicts the similar ‘A’ character with the intertwining line, but in a bit darker shades.

The initial Nordiques’ uniforms featured the white-and-blue look, with the French lilac and the team’s emblem on the shirt. The uniform was being modified with the time, and the latest variant shifted rather to the dark-red & blue palette, and with the team emblem in the center of the shirt.
