Tampa Bay Buccaneers Logo history

The Buccaneers were established in 1974 in Tampa, Florida. Both the name and other parts of their brand are inspired by the Pirate Golden Age, during which the buccaneers (anti-Spanish pirates) often used hideouts across the peninsula to quickly strike out into the silver fleets and scarper.

1976 – 1996

The initial logo displayed a face of a typical Southern bandit with a big plumed hat with wide rims, long hair, an earring, thin moustache and a dagger held between his teeth. Most details were either orange or red, but some were also white (such as the teeth or the dagger’s hilt).

1996 – 2013

In the 90s, they introduced a pirate flag as a new logo. It was a piece of red cloth with a white Jolly Roger (sabers crossed) in the middle. Prominently, they put an orange football right beneath the skull. Instead of the flagpole, there was an ordinary pirate saber with a grey blade and red hilt.

2013 – 2019

They made the colors paler in this new edition, as well as got rid of the excessive black lines all over the flag. On the saber, they pretty much just turned the hilt grey and colored the inner half of the blade white. And lastly, there was also a slight shade around the whole logo in this version.

2019 – today

In 2019, they made the palette darker again across the whole logo, which is largely the only addition they made then.

Helmet History

The team primarily used orange, red and white as the headwear colors since the inception. Initially, much of the surface was white, while the orange and red were reserved for the logo on the side, as well as the midline stripes and the face protection. Later, the orange became a dominant color, with the red logo on the side.

Uniform History

Much of their recent uniforms were orange, white and red, in various combinations. Orange is a dominant color: the jerseys are commonly colored this way and paired with white trousers. The reds are mostly alternative. This was the same for many prior combinations, but back then the orange was darker, on the border of brown at times.
