Tampa Bay Lightning is an ice hockey team from Florida. They are one of the newer teams to join the NHL. Despite this, they are one of the more successful teams to come from the South. Not only are they rather powerful, but they’ve also won several cups already over the course of their several decades long career.

Who owns Tampa Bay Lightning? The team is owned by Jeff Vinik. He bought them in 2010.

The team was established in 1992 in Tampa, Florida. The state never had any proper hockey team before, on account of their infamous heat. The name is supposed to inspire swiftness and power, but it could also be a reference to the state’s tumultuous, stormy and humid weather.

1992 – 2001

The 1992 logo depicted a white lightning with a black underside, positioned right over the grey circle. The circle was cut short above with a cursive ‘Tampa Bay’ inscription colored in blue, and also had a double white & blue outline. Next to the bottom of the lightning, there was also the word ‘Lightning’, also in blue, but in tall, capital letters.

2001 – 2007

In 2001, they simply tweaked the color blue on the logo to be slightly darker.

2007 – 2011

The 2007 revision was actually a massive improvement. They made the lightning image much sharper and pointier. They removed much of the 3D feel from the element, and also repainted the black underside into blue. Of the written parts, only the one above stays. It has a new style: linear, sharp and tilted. The letters are generally bigger, too.

2011 – today

In 2011, they simplified the lot.
There was now simply the blue lightning joined by a ring of the same color. Both had a measure of perspective and volume. Moreover, it’s visible that the lightning actually has an underside again. Here, however, it’s white and thus blocks the adjacent parts of the ring. The space inside the ring, though, was also white.

Helmet History

There have generally been three variations of Lightning helmets. The two major variations sported blue and white. They are now used for home and away clothes respectively, but there’s also an alternative black variant, which is used the least of all. The former two, however, were with the team since the beginning.

Uniform History

Tampa Bay Lightning Uniform

Although now the uniforms are almost completely blue (home) or white (away), the historic designs were more complex. The oldest jerseys were black for the most part, with the exception of thick white stripes along the belt, sleeves and shoulders. Later, they also used black designs with blue sleeves and blue-grey-black mixtures. Eventually, they settled on clean, homogenous designs.
