Tampa Bay Rays is a baseball team from Florida. They are one of the younger teams to join MLB. In it, they compete as part of the Eastern Division of the AL. Despite high hopes, they have been particularly unfortunate in the first decade of existence, but they went on to become one of the stronger teams of the Division.
Who owns Tampa Bay Rays? Stuart Sternberg owns the team. He’s a successful Wall Street investor.
History Logo
The team was created in 1998 in Florida. Their headquarters are located in the town of St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay Area. Initially, they were called ‘Devil Rays’, which was then shortened to just ‘Rays’. Florida is regularly visited by the giant manta rays, which is one of the explanations behind the name.
1998 – 2001
Their first logo features a black manta ray put onto a diagonal oval shape, painted with a blue-to-yellow gradient. Above the creature, they wrote ‘Tampa Bay’ in a blue, tall script. On the opposite end, there was a bit white ‘Death Rays’ inscription that used a more uneven, disproportioned style.
2001 – 2008
In 2001, they scrapped the ‘Devil’ from the name and instead wrote ‘Tampa Bay’ in a similar white script they used in the previous design. They also moved the ray to below this inscription and painted the oval dark blue.
2008 – 2019
The new 2008 design depicts a white rhomb outlined with light blue and framed with dark blue. Right in front of it, they put the word ‘Rays’ in an orderly, serif style. Except for a longer ‘tail’ on ‘R’, it was rather usual. The color of choice was for the letters was blue, although there was also a small yellow glint of sorts inside the ‘R’.
2019 – today
For this next logo, they decided to only use the team’s name as it appears on the previous logo. It was further outlined with white and then light blue.
Helmet History
The Rays mostly use dark blue helmets and caps, although there are also variations. They include combinations of turquoise and blue, fully black helmets and several more designs. The dark blue are still by far the most popular, and they’ve been using them the most, only changing emblems occasionally.
Uniform History
There have been a surprisingly big variety of Rays uniforms since their inception. The most popular fully white uniforms, but there are also many colorful variations, including blue jerseys worn with turquoise pants, the same but with white pants, turquoise jerseys with various and the green jerseys used as alternatives.
